This year I started volunteering at Dream Center Peoria for our church. They run a basketball program mainly for inner city kids ranging from 8 years old to highschool. I took the high school group and it’s been quite a blast. Each Monday night we practice from 6-8 in the evening. The kids don’t really want to do any drills – they just want to play. That’s fine with me. During the winter months we’d have 15-20 kids regularly, but now that the weather is nice we only get 5-10 which means I’m usually stuck playing (I like that though).

This basketball league has been a great thing for most of these kids. Gives them a place to go and spend some time in a positive atmosphere. It’s been hard talking and getting to know some of these kids and hearing about some of their rough family lives. The talent is amazing. I think I could take my group and go up against most Peoria high school teams in talent. It’s discipline and teamwork that we’d need to work on to compete. Hopefully I’ll get the opportunity to continue doing this in the future.
